Features of Laser Processing

  • Advantages
    • No tool wear
    • In cutting, electrical discharge machining (except wire EDM), and grinding, tool wear and consumption always occur.
In laser processing and wire EDM, there is no need to consider tool wear.
  • Small diameter
    • For fine laser processing, the beam diameter can be as small as 20μm, allowing for potentially more precise processing compared to other methods.
  • Short pulse lasers (ps, fs) cause minimal thermal impact on the workpiece.
  • Can process non-conductive materials such as ceramics and glass, as well as high-hardness materials like carbide.
  • Disadvantages
    • Since laser processing machines for fine processing have lower power, they are not suitable for deep processing and take longer processing time.
    • Light does not stop midway, so it is not possible to repeat processing at the same height as with an end mill.

Note: The above comparison is based on the laser processing machines used by our company.
